Camera workflows in post-production: comparison guide

Table of Contents

Introduction: The Camera is a Post-Production Choice

Too often, the camera is chosen solely for its 'look' or daily rental price. However, the real cost of a camera is often measured after the shoot: transcoding time, extra hard drives, grading hours to match shots, or inability to save an exposure error. Understanding the workflow beforehand is the key to a serene production.

Analyzed Camera Families

Premium Cinema

ARRI (Alexa), RED (V-Raptor, Komodo). The absolute standard, robust RAW, heavy but secure workflow.

Modular Cinema

Sony (Venice, FX9, FX6), Canon (C300, C500). Efficient codecs (XAVC), great flexibility, broadcast/cinema image.

Integrated Post-Production

Blackmagic Design (URSA, Pyxis). Cameras designed around DaVinci Resolve and BRAW.

Hybrid / Compact

Sony (A7S), Panasonic (GH), Canon (R). High-performance small sensors, compressed recording, photo ergonomics.

Smartphones

iPhone Pro (Apple Log), High-end Android. Ultra-mobility, aggressive software processing, specific workflow.

Capacity to 'Push' the Image

In grading, not all images are equal when facing extreme modifications.

ARRI / RED Elastic. You can underexpose by 3 stops and bring it up without excessive noise. Highlights roll gently to white.

Sony / Blackmagic Solid. Good resistance, but noise rises faster. Highlight Roll-off is good but less organic than ARRI.

Hybrids / Smartphones Brittle. If it's burnt, it's lost (harsh digital clipping). If you lift shadows, compression blocks appear.

Impact on Editing and Finishing

Machine Performance

Paradoxically, small compressed formats (Hybrid/Smartphone H.265) require MORE CPU power than cinema RAW (decoded by GPU).

Conform & Versioning

Cinema cameras have perfect Timecodes (TC) and unique filenames. Hybrids/smartphones often have drifting TCs or generic names (C001.mp4), a conforming nightmare.

HDR and Camera Workflows

HDR (High Dynamic Range) demands a flawless source. ARRI and RED are built for HDR as they capture more than SDR shows. Recent 10-bit hybrids do well. Smartphones capture in Dolby Vision, but integrating it into a classic film remains complex.

Choose by Film, Not by Camera

Feature Film Cinema

ARRI / RED / Sony Venice

Max security, big screen projection, longevity.

TV Documentary

Sony FX6 / Canon C300

Ergonomics, manageable file weight, Broadcast look.

Music Video / Web Ad

Blackmagic / Hybrids

Tight budget, strong aesthetic possible in post, mobile screen delivery.

Experimental Film

Smartphone / Hybrid

Total freedom, technical constraints integrated into art.

Comparative FAQ

ForCut Studio Approach

At ForCut, we are not camera salespeople, but image analysts. We receive all types of footage. We know how to treat ARRIRAW with respect, but also how to optimize an iPhone shot so it doesn't clash in your edit. We help you validate your workflow before the first roll.

Conclusion

"A good workflow is not the one using the most expensive camera, it's the one post-production can sustain until the end. The film often plays out after the shoot: choose a camera that leaves you ammunition for the final battle of grading."
