Canon Cinema EOS files in post-production: guide

Introduction: The Canon Cinema EOS Philosophy

Canon's priority has always been color fidelity and ease of use. Unlike other manufacturers focused on pure resolution, Canon prioritizes balance: an organic image, flattering skin tones straight out of camera, and a RAW format (Cinema RAW Light) designed not to choke post-production workstations.

The Canon Cinema EOS Cameras

Premium Cinema

C700 FF / C700. The flagships for high-end cinema, often used with Codex recorders for uncompressed RAW.

Full-Frame New Gen

C500 Mark II. 5.9K Full Frame sensor, modular, recording Cinema RAW Light internally to CFexpress.

Super35 Workhorse

C300 Mark III. DGO (Dual Gain Output) sensor for exceptional dynamic range. The standard for premium documentary and commercials.

Compact Cinema

C70 & C200. The C70 offers the DGO sensor in a DSLR/Mirrorless type body. The C200 democratized RAW Light.

Lightweight

C100 Mark II. Although limited to 1080p AVCHD/MP4, it remains used for its colorimetry.

Canon Recording Formats

Cinema RAW Light (CRM)

Canon's revolutionary format. Offers RAW flexibility (white balance, ISO) with a file size 1/3 to 1/5 of standard RAW, with no perceptible visual loss.

XF-AVC

A very robust intra-frame codec (4:2:2 10-bit), encapsulated in MXF. Ideal for immediate TV broadcast (ready-to-air).

ProRes / External RAW

Via SDI/HDMI outputs to Atomos or Odyssey, for those who prefer a ProRes RAW or ProRes 422 workflow.

Canon Cinema Pipeline

File Architecture

Cinema RAW Light (.CRM) is a single file containing image and audio, unlike image sequences (dpx/tiff). Canon 'Debayering' is efficient but requires a recent CPU/GPU for smooth 6K/8K playback.

Media Preparation

Editing Canon Cinema Files

Native RAW Light Editing

Possible on modern machines (Mac Studio, RTX PC). DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, and FCPX read CRM natively.

Proxy Workflow

Canon cameras can record XF-AVC proxies (2K/HD) to SD card simultaneously with RAW. This is the safest and fastest method.

NLE Compatibility

The 'Canon RAW Plugin' is sometimes necessary depending on your software version (Avid MC, older Premiere versions).

RAW & Image Parameter Management

In the 'Camera Raw' tab of your software:

ISO & Gain ISO is modifiable in post. Note, the DGO sensor (C300 III / C70) has specific behavior where gain changes the blending of the two readouts (high/low sensitivity).

White Balance Freely adjustable. Kelvin and Tint are reinterpreted without loss.

Sharpness/Detail Canon sometimes applies default sharpness. In RAW, you can disable it for a more cinematic/soft look.

Canon Color Science

Canon's strong point. Color science is designed to be pleasing immediately.

Canon Log 2 Offers the widest dynamic range (15+ stops) and most detail in shadows. Requires careful grading (more noise).

Canon Log 3 Slightly less dynamic range in shadows (cleaner, less noise), but retains highlight latitude. Easier to grade quickly.

Cinema Gamut Canon's widest color space. Preferred for HDR or cinema grading.

Grading Stage: Specifics

Skin Tones

Canon skins are naturally rich in red/yellow. In grading, there is often less corrective work to do than on other brands.

Noise in C-Log 2

C-Log 2 digs very deep into blacks. Denoising is often necessary on low lights.

Deliverables & Mastering

The 12-bit or 10-bit of RAW Light allows for very high-quality HDR exports. Canon color stability facilitates compliance with Broadcast standards (EBU R103).
