Introduction: The Sony Cinema Line Philosophy
Sony has successfully harmonized its cinema cameras (VENICE) and compact cameras (FX Series). The philosophy relies on Full-Frame or Super35 high-sensitivity sensors (Dual Base ISO), massive exposure latitude, and unified color science designed to integrate easily into modern pipelines (ACES, Resolve RCM).
The Sony Cinema Line Cameras
Premium Cinema
VENICE 2 (8.6K/6K) & VENICE. Full-Frame sensors, internal X-OCN recording or via AXS-R7 recorder. The reference for feature films.
New Gen Full-Frame
BURANO. The little sister of VENICE 2, integrating IBIS and internal X-OCN LT on CFexpress Type B cards.
Compact Cinema
FX9 (6K sensor) & FX6. Workhorses for documentary and commercials. Robust XAVC-I recording, external RAW possible.
Lightweight / Indie
FX3 & FX30. DSLR form factor, but true video architecture (fan, tally, S-Log3 10-bit).
Sony Recording Formats
X-OCN (Extended Original Camera Negative)
The king format (VENICE/BURANO). 16-bit linear compressed RAW. Exists in XT (High Quality), ST (Standard), LT (Light). Offers RAW flexibility with manageable bitrates.
Sony RAW / X-AVC
XAVC-I (Intra) is the 10-bit 4:2:2 broadcast standard, very easy to edit. XAVC-HS (H.265) is more compressed.
ProRes
Available on some cameras (VENICE) for fast workflows without the need for RAW.
Sony Cinema Pipeline
- Shooting (VENICE/FX6)
- Ingest (AXS/CFexpress)
- Editing (X-OCN/Proxy)
- Color (ACES/RCM)
- Grading (16-bit)
- Mastering (DCP/HDR)
File Architecture
X-OCN files are encapsulated in MXF. They retain all camera metadata (EI, WB, Tint) which are non-destructive. Sony 'Debayering' is highly GPU-optimized (CUDA/Metal), making native editing possible on powerful workstations.
Media Preparation
- 1Media: AXS cards (VENICE), CFexpress Type A/B (FX6/FX3/BURANO), XQD (FX9).
- 2Security: Copy with Checksum (xxHash64) mandatory. AXS cards require a dedicated fast reader (Thunderbolt 3).
- 3Structure: Keep the full XDROOT directory structure to guarantee linking with clip metadata (XML).
Editing Sony Cinema Files
Native X-OCN Editing
X-OCN LT edits very well natively. XT may require significant resources (high bitrates).
Proxy Workflow
Most Sony cameras generate internal low-res proxies (XAVC Proxy) that can be used for immediate offline editing.
NLE Compatibility
Premiere Pro, Avid, and Resolve natively read X-OCN and XAVC. The 'Sony RAW Viewing' plugin may be needed for older versions.
RAW & Image Parameter Management
In X-OCN, you have access to RAW parameters in DaVinci Resolve:
Dual Base ISO Sony sensors have two analog circuits (e.g., ISO 800 / ISO 3200 for VENICE). Choosing the right base on set is crucial for signal-to-noise ratio.
Exposure Index (EI) In Cine EI mode, changing ISO does not affect the RAW file (it's metadata for monitoring). You can adjust exposure in post without loss.
White Balance Freely adjustable in post-production on X-OCN/RAW files.
Sony Color Science
Standardization around S-Log3 makes it easy to match an FX3 and a VENICE.
S-Gamut3.Cine vs S-Gamut3 S-Gamut3.Cine is optimized for the P3 gamut (Cinema) and is easier to grade. S-Gamut3 is wider (close to BT.2020) but more complex to handle.
S-Log3 Standard logarithmic curve. Offers about 15 stops of dynamic range. Be careful not to underexpose (noise in shadows).
ACES The Sony VENICE IDT is excellent. ACEScct workflow is highly recommended for multi-camera productions.
Grading Stage: Specifics
Highlights
S-Log3 has a very smooth roll-off. In grading, map the white point correctly to keep this softness, especially on skin tones.
Noise Management
S-Log3 lifts shadows significantly. If you underexposed, noise may appear. Use moderate 'Spatial NR'.
Deliverables & Mastering
The 16-bit quality of X-OCN is ideal for HDR (High Dynamic Range) Dolby Vision or HDR10 masters, as well as 4K Cinema DCPs.
