RED R3D files in post-production: technical guide

Table of Contents

Introduction: The Stakes of RED RAW

Working in RED RAW means manipulating raw sensor data before any 'baking' (debayering). This offers immense exposure latitude and the ability to radically change white balance, ISO, and gamma in post-production without degradation, provided a rigorous non-destructive pipeline is followed.

R3D Format Architecture

REDCODE RAW

Visually lossless Wavelet compression. The ratio (3:1 to 12:1) determines bitrate but not resolution.

Metadata

Camera settings (ISO, Kelvin, Tint) are metadata. The raw image remains unchanged; only the software interpretation changes.

Debayering

Computationally intensive process (CPU/GPU) consisting of reconstructing the color image from the sensor's Bayer pattern.

RED R3D Pipeline

R3D Media Preparation

Editing in R3D

Native editing is possible thanks to GPU decoding (CUDA/Metal).

Premiere Pro

Access via 'Master Clip Effects > RED Source Settings'.

DaVinci Resolve

Full native controls in the Camera Raw tab.

Avid Media Composer

Requires RED AMA plugin. Proxy workflow often preferred.

RAW Management in Post-production

Floating ISO

ISO is not baked in. Adjust exposure cleanly via RAW metadata rather than via destructive gain tools.

Highlight Recovery

Highlight recovery possible on individual channels before clipping.

White Balance

Precise adjustment of temperature and tint without artificial color drift.

RED Color Science & Color Spaces

The adoption of the IPP2 (Image Processing Pipeline 2) has standardized the workflow.

REDWideGamutRGB Ultra-wide color space covering more than visible spectrum, standard for grading.

Log3G10 Logarithmic gamma curve preserving the full dynamic range (16+ stops).

ACES RED cameras are perfectly integrated into the ACES workflow (IDT: RED Wide Gamut).

From Editing to Grading (Conform)

The critical stage. To maintain access to RAW in grading, never 'Bake' (render) during edit export. Use XML or AAF to relink original R3D footage in DaVinci Resolve.

Grading Stage

Debayer Quality

Work in 'Good' or 'Half' for fluidity, but imperatively export in 'Premium' or 'Full' for maximum sharpness (Denoise & Detail).

Noise Management

R3D has no internal noise reduction. Slight Chroma Noise Reduction often needs to be applied in post.

Deliverables & Exports

RAW allows deriving masters without loss: HDR (PQ/HLG) and SDR (Rec.709) from the same timeline using IPP2 Output Transforms.

Conclusion

"The RED R3D format is a Ferrari: powerful but demanding. A mastered pipeline is the key to not limiting the potential of your images."
