Avid vs Premiere vs DaVinci: which editing software?

Table of Contents

Overview

Avid Media Composer

The Industrial Tank

The absolute reference for feature films and broadcast TV. Designed for multi-user stability and rigorous media management. It is a database manager as much as an editing software.

Adobe Premiere Pro

The Swiss Army Knife

The king of flexibility. Capable of ingesting any format (phone, 8K, archives) without immediate transcoding. Perfect integration with After Effects and Photoshop. Ideal for short forms, ads, web, and TV docs.

DaVinci Resolve Studio

The All-in-One Challenger

Formerly just for color grading, it is now a complete suite (Edit, VFX, Sound, Color). Its free version is overpowered. Very popular for indie, music videos, and increasingly documentaries.

Detailed Comparison

Stability & Security

Avid wins hands down on 2-hour timelines with 100 audio tracks. It almost never crashes if the workflow is followed. Premiere can become unstable if too many codecs are mixed. Resolve is very stable as long as the GPU keeps up.

Media Management

Avid forces transcoding and renaming into its 'Avid MediaFiles' folder. It's restrictive but saves lives in post-prod. Premiere allows mixing everything, which is risky. Resolve uses a powerful PostgreSQL database but requires maintenance.

Performance (4K/8K)

Resolve is the king of GPU usage. If you have a big graphics card (like on our Mac Studio, M2 Ultra), Resolve flies. Premiere is very CPU-dependent. Avid is very light once media is transcoded to DNxHD.

Grading & Image

DaVinci Resolve is the global standard. Editing in Resolve allows instant grading without XML/AAF export. Premiere has Lumetri (decent for quick work). Avid has Symphony (aging).

By Project Type

Feature Film / TV Series

WINNER: Avid Media Composer

For project sharing management (Bin Locking) between multiple editors and assistants. And for compliance with sound post-prod labs (ProTools).

Documentary / Reportage

WINNER: Adobe Premiere Pro / Avid

Premiere for flexibility with varied archive formats. Avid if the documentary is very long (series) and edited by multiple people.

Advertising / Music Video / Brand Content

WINNER: DaVinci Resolve / Premiere

Need for quick roundtrips between edit, VFX, and grade. Resolve allows finishing everything in the same software.

Hybrid Workflows

Offline Avid → Finish Resolve

The cinema standard. Structural edit in Avid, AAF conform in Resolve for grading and Master export.

Premiere → Resolve

Very frequent. Dynamic edit in Premiere, XML export for Resolve grading. Beware of unsupported effects.

Everything in Resolve

Increasingly common for 'end-to-end' projects where the editor also does the grading.
