Adobe Premiere Pro editing: film guide
Table of Contents
Express Checklist Before Starting an Edit
- Fast working drive connected via Thunderbolt/USB-C (avoid drives 90% full).
- Adobe Premiere Pro up to date (but avoid major updates mid-project).
- Cache folder set to a fast local SSD (never on a remote server).
- Auto Save enabled every 10-15 minutes.
- Sequence manually configured (don't rely on auto drag-and-drop).
- GPU Acceleration (Metal/CUDA) enabled in project settings.
- Audio interface configured to 48kHz to avoid desync.
Project Configuration
Media Cache & Scratch Disks
This is the #1 cause of slowdowns. Go to Preferences > Media Cache. Check 'Automatically delete oldest cache files' or delete manually. Ensure cache is on the fastest drive available (NVMe/SSD).
Auto Save
Go to Preferences > Auto Save. Set to 'Every 10 minutes'. Increase 'Maximum Project Versions' to 50 or more. This will save your life in case of project corruption.
Mercury Playback Engine
In File > Project Settings > General, ensure Renderer is set to 'Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration' (Metal on Mac, CUDA on Nvidia). If grayed out, your GPU drivers might be outdated.
Sequence Settings
Never create a sequence by dragging a random clip. Configure it properly:
Timebase (FPS)
Must match your main footage exactly (24, 25, 50 fps).
Frame Size
1920x1080 (HD) is standard. Edit in 4K only if necessary.
Audio Sample Rate
48000 Hz (48kHz). This is the imperative video standard.
Video Previews
Change 'I-Frame Only MPEG' to 'ProRes 422' or 'ProRes 422 LT'. This makes your renders (green line) ultra-smooth and reusable for export.
Proxies and Workflow
When to create proxies?
As soon as you edit H.265, 8K RAW, or multicam. Premiere does not natively decode these formats smoothly without a beast of a machine.
Creation and Management
Select your clips in the bin > Right click > Proxy > Create Proxies. Choose 'ProRes 422 Proxy' (Mac) or 'DNxHR LB' (PC). Don't forget to add the 'Toggle Proxies' button (square icon with two arrows) to your program monitor to toggle them.
Common Bugs and Solutions
Slowdowns / Stuttering Playback (Lag)
Symptoms:
Image freezes, audio continues, or playhead jumps.
Cause :
Heavy codec (H.264/H.265), drive too slow, or full cache.
Fix:
Enable Proxies. Lower playback resolution (1/2 or 1/4). Clear Media Cache.
Random Crash During Playback
Symptoms:
Software closes abruptly.
Cause :
GPU conflict, unstable third-party plugin, or audio driver.
Fix:
Update GPU drivers (Studio Driver). Disable heavy effects (Lumetri, Denoise) temporarily (Global FX Mute).
Very Slow Project Opening
Symptoms:
Loading bar stuck on 'Loading media'.
Cause :
Premiere trying to access a disconnected network drive or scanning thousands of files.
Fix:
Wait patiently. If stuck, move source files temporarily to force 'Offline' mode and relink them by folder later.
Timeline Not Responding
Symptoms:
Cannot move a clip or press play.
Cause :
Corrupted workspace or active Audio tool.
Fix:
Menu Window > Workspaces > Reset to Saved Layout. Sometimes, restarting the computer is the only solution to clear RAM.
Audio Issues (Desync / Crackling)
Symptoms:
Sound is out of sync or crackles.
Cause :
Sample rate conflict (44.1kHz vs 48kHz) or corrupted audio cache.
Fix:
Check Preferences > Audio Hardware. Ensure input/output is 48kHz. Delete .pek and .cfa files in cache folder.
Media Pending (Yellow/Red Screen)
Symptoms:
'Media Pending' message never leaves.
Cause :
Premiere cannot generate preview or access file.
Fix:
Close Premiere. Delete the ENTIRE Media Cache Files folder. Reopen project and let it 'Conform' peacefully.
Bugs After Update
Symptoms:
Features broken after update.
Cause :
Corrupted preferences from old version.
Fix:
On Premiere launch, hold Alt/Option (Mac) or Shift (PC) to reset preferences.
Export Error (Compiling Movie Error)
Symptoms:
Export fails at X% with 'Error compiling movie'.
Cause :
Corrupt GPU effect or black frame at that specific moment.
Fix:
Change Renderer to 'Software Only' (slow but stable) for export. Or identify problematic shot where export crashes.
Effects Not Showing
Symptoms:
Black or red screen with Lumetri or plugins.
Cause :
GPU VRAM saturated.
Fix:
Close other apps. Reduce preview resolution. Restart Premiere.
Best Practices
Organize your folders ON THE HARD DRIVE exactly like in the software (01_FOOTAGE, 02_AUDIO, etc.). Use the 'Consolidate and Transcode' function in Project Manager to archive a clean project. Name your tracks (Dialogue, Music, FX) to facilitate later mixing. Do incremental 'Save As' every day (Project_V1, Project_V2) in addition to Auto Save. Use 'Adjustment Layers' for global effects or quick grading.Absolute Don'ts
- ⚠ Never work with MP3 files for the final master (convert to WAV/AIFF).
- ⚠ Do not use 'Merge Clips' if you need to send an OMF/AAF to sound mixing (it breaks metadata).
- ⚠ Do not leave invisible empty Gaps in the timeline.
- ⚠ Never update Premiere Pro in the middle of a critical project without keeping the old version installed.
