Avid Media Composer editing: film guide
Table of Contents
Express Checklist Before Opening a Project
- Verify hard drive is connected (Thunderbolt/USB-C) BEFORE launching Avid.
- Folder structure followed to the letter: Drive Root > Avid MediaFiles > MXF > 1.
- User Profile: Never use 'Default' settings or another editor's profile. Create your own.
- Project Format: Check Frame Rate (24/25) and Raster Dimension (1080p/UHD) before any import.
- Disable computer and hard drive sleep mode in the OS settings.
- Verify that the keyboard language (OS) matches your Avid mapping.
- If using a Blackmagic/AJA card, check driver compatibility with your Avid version.
Common Bugs and Solutions
Most Avid issues stem from media database management.
Media Offline (Red Screen 'Media Offline')
Symptoms:
Clips are red in the timeline or bin.
Cause :
Corrupted database or moved files.
Fix:
Go to folder: Drive > Avid MediaFiles > MXF > 1 (and other numbered folders). DELETE files 'msmMMOB.mdb' and 'msmFMID.pmr'. Restart Avid. It will rescan and rebuild a clean database.
Media Scan Not Starting
Symptoms:
You added MXF files but Avid doesn't see them and doesn't scan at startup.
Cause :
Wrong folder structure.
Fix:
The path MUST be exactly: Drive Root > Avid MediaFiles (no space after Avid) > MXF > Number (e.g., 1). If it's in a subfolder 'Footage', Avid will never see it.
Crash Opening a Bin / Exception Error
Symptoms:
Avid quits unexpectedly or shows 'Exception: DOMAIN_COPYout_OF_RANGE'.
Cause :
Corrupted bin or font issue.
Fix:
Create a new blank Bin. In Finder/Explorer, copy the .avb file of the corrupt bin elsewhere. Open the new bin and try importing sequences from the Attic (auto backup).
Audio Desync / Drift
Symptoms:
Sound gradually drifts out of sync.
Cause :
Mixed sample rates (44.1kHz vs 48kHz).
Fix:
Check 'Project Settings > Audio Project'. Ensure you are at 48kHz. Transcode all 44.1kHz audio to 48kHz before editing.
Playback Stuttering
Symptoms:
Playback stops, drops frames (red/yellow lines).
Cause :
Using 'Link' (AMA) on heavy codecs (H.264, H.265) without transcoding.
Fix:
Avid dislikes native H.264. 'Transcode' your footage to DNxHD 36 (LB) or DNxHR LB for editing. This is imperative for fluidity.
Relink / Relocate Issues
Symptoms:
Cannot link offline clips to original files.
Cause :
Different Timecode or missing 'Tape Name'.
Fix:
Select clips > Right click > Relink. Check 'Relink to selected items in open bins' if you have target footage open. Verify 'Ignore extension' is checked.
Effects with a Red Dot (Render)
Symptoms:
Effect does not play in real-time.
Cause :
Effect requires calculation (Render).
Fix:
Select effect in timeline > Clip Menu > Render In/Out. If persistent, check Render Disk in 'Media Creation'.
Export Errors (Exception / Segmentation Fault)
Symptoms:
Export crashes at X%.
Cause :
Corrupt media at that point or full drive.
Fix:
Perform a 'Video Mixdown' of your video track. If the Mixdown crashes, you found the corrupt clip. Then export the sequence using the Mixdown.
Attic / Autosave Not Saving
Symptoms:
You lose work after a crash.
Cause :
Misconfigured 'Bin Settings'.
Fix:
Go to Settings > User > Bin. Set 'Auto-Save interval' to 5 or 10 minutes. Also check that the 'Avid Attic' folder is not read-only.
General Instability Signs
Symptoms:
Weird bugs, disappearing windows.
Cause :
Corrupted User Profile (very common in Avid).
Fix:
Don't search further: create a NEW User Profile. This solves 50% of unexplained Avid problems.
Import, Link (AMA) & Transcode
Understanding how to get footage in is crucial.
1. Link (formerly AMA Link)
Use 'Source Browser' to link files (Link). It's fast, Avid reads the original file on disk. Useful for viewing, but not recommended for editing a whole feature if codecs are heavy.
2. Transcode / Consolidate
Once footage is linked, select it > Right click > Consolidate/Transcode. Choose 'Transcode'. This is the step where Avid creates its own optimized MXF files (DNxHD/HR) and places them in its sacred 'Avid MediaFiles' folder. This is the pro method.
3. Import (Legacy)
The old 'File > Import' method is slow and obsolete for video. Use only for small audio files (WAV) or graphics (PNG/JPG).
Codec Recommendation
For Offline editing, use DNxHD 36 (1080p) or DNxHR LB (UHD/4K). It is lightweight and ultra-smooth.
